# Upland Software's CCAT, then Codility: preparing for both

By [Avi Flombaum](https://avi.nyc) · Updated October 13, 2026

Upland Software candidates report the CCAT as the first stage for software engineering roles, followed by a Codility coding test and then technical, business-unit and HR interviews. Upland does not publish a cutoff. Our estimate for engineering candidates is about 25 to 28 out of 50, with 27 as a working target.

Strong evidence

A candidate in a Glassdoor community thread describes Upland Software's software engineering process: stage one is the CCAT, followed by a Codility coding test, then technical, business-unit and HR rounds.

Software engineering is the only role reported, and Criteria's suggested floor for Software Development is 20. We add a typical tech-employer margin of 5 to 8 points. This is our estimate, not an Upland number.

## Where the CCAT sits in Upland Software's hiring process

1. ### Stage 1: CCAT

Reported as the first stage: 50 questions in 15 minutes.
2. ### Codility coding test

Reported as the second stage, an online timed coding assessment.
3. ### Technical interview

Reported after Codility, with engineers on the team.
4. ### Business-unit round

Reported; Upland runs several product lines, and this round is with the unit that is hiring.
5. ### HR round

Reported as the final conversation before an offer.

Steps are as candidates describe them. Processes change by role and over time.

## Can your pace reach Upland Software's target?

The numbers below use our estimate for Upland Software: a range of 25 to 28 out of 50 with a target of 27. Nothing is saved. If you ask Clever below, it sees your numbers.

Projected score 23 of 50: below the estimate

- Answer 6 more questions (36 in total) at 75% accuracy.
- Or lift accuracy to 90% on the 30 you already answer.

The CCAT score is the number you get right. This projection counts no lucky guesses.

## Two timed tests in one week

Upland Software sells a portfolio of cloud business applications across several product lines. For engineering candidates, the reported process puts two timed online tests back to back: the CCAT and then a Codility coding test. They reward different things. The CCAT punishes slow, careful work; Codility punishes sloppy, untested code.

The mistake is preparing for both at once with the same mindset. Split the week. Spend the first days on the CCAT, because it comes first and decides whether you see the Codility link at all. Shift to coding practice only once the CCAT is done.

- Days 1 and 2: one timed practice test, then drill the two weakest question types.
- Day 3: a second timed test, then take the CCAT while the pace is fresh.
- Days 4 to 7: Codility-style problems, with edge cases and tests written out.

## Switching from guess-and-move to test-every-edge

On the CCAT, a good habit is to commit to an answer within about 20 seconds and move on. On a coding test, that same habit costs points: you need to check empty inputs, off-by-one bounds and large values before you submit.

If you take both on the same day, give yourself a break between them and say the switch out loud: speed now, care later. Candidates who carry CCAT pace into a coding test tend to submit too early.

## Where engineering candidates gain and lose points

Short algebra and mental rotation questions both reward a fixed routine. Algebra items like 7x + 18 = 179 should take one subtraction and one division, done in your head. Rotation items reward picking one corner of the tile and tracking only that corner.

Most engineers do not lose points on these types for lack of skill. They lose them by overthinking. Practise until each takes under 20 seconds, then spend the saved time on verbal items.

Use the pace check on this page with the numbers from one timed practice test. If your pace cannot reach the target, the saved seconds on algebra and rotation items are where the extra questions come from.

## Question types to drill first

- [**Mental rotation** Spatial items reward a fixed routine: track one corner, ignore the rest. Spatial reasoning with worked examples](https://clevercatprep.com/ccat-spatial-reasoning-questions)

## Roles at Upland Software reported to include the CCAT

Criteria floors are from Criteria's sample score report. Our estimates are not published cutoffs.

| Role | Criteria job family and floor | Our estimate | Note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Software engineer | Software Development: 20 | 25 to 28 | The reported role. The CCAT is the first gate, so it decides who gets the Codility link. |
| Senior or lead software engineer | Software Development: 20 | 26 to 29 | Not reported separately. Employers often expect more from senior candidates, so we lean one point higher. |

## Tips for the Upland Software CCAT

- Take the CCAT before you start Codility practice; it is the first gate and the faster one to improve.
- On rotation items, pick one marked corner and follow only that corner through the turn.
- Do algebra in your head: undo the addition, then the multiplication, and check the option list.
- Leave a gap of at least an hour between the CCAT and any coding test taken the same day.
- Read the business-unit name in your invite; the later round is with that team, so know what its product does.

## Practice questions in the same formats

These are our own practice questions, written in the CCAT's formats. Upland Software does not publish its test questions, and neither does Criteria. For a full timed run, take the [free CCAT practice test](https://clevercatprep.com/free-ccat-practice-test).

Question 1 Algebra & word equations Easier

If 7x + 18 = 179, what is x?

- A. 28
- B. 24
- C. 22
- D. 25
- E. 23

**Show the answer and the fast route**

**Answer: E, 23**

Subtract 18, then divide by 7: (179 − 18) ÷ 7 = 23.

The fast route

Name the unknown once; translate the relationship before doing arithmetic.

Solve it step by step

1. #### 1 Name the unknown

Let x = the number we are solving for
2. #### 2 Translate the words into math
   - “7 times x, plus 18, equals 179” `7x + 18 = 179`
3. #### 3 Solve the equation, one move at a time

Whatever you do to one side, do to the other to keep the two sides equal.
   1. Start The equation 7x + 18 = 179
   2. 1 Rule Subtract the same amount from both sides Subtract 18 from both sides 7x = 161
   3. 2 Rule Divide both sides by the same nonzero number Divide both sides by 7 x = 23
4. #### 4 Answer

   x = 23. Check: 7 × 23 + 18 = 179.

Question 2 Mental rotation Easier

Which tile shows the original rotated 90° clockwise? Do not flip it.

Original

[image: 3 by 3 tile. Filled row,column positions: 1,1; 2,1; 2,2; 3,1; 3,3]

- A. [image: 3 by 3 tile. Filled row,column positions: 1,1; 1,2; 1,3; 2,2; 3,1]
- B. [image: 3 by 3 tile. Filled row,column positions: 1,1; 1,3; 2,1; 2,2; 3,1]
- C. [image: 3 by 3 tile. Filled row,column positions: 1,1; 2,2; 3,1; 3,2; 3,3]
- D. [image: 3 by 3 tile. Filled row,column positions: 1,3; 2,2; 2,3; 3,1; 3,3]
- E. [image: 3 by 3 tile. Filled row,column positions: 1,1; 1,3; 2,2; 2,3; 3,3]

**Show the answer and the fast route**

**Answer: A**

[image: 3 by 3 tile. Filled row,column positions: 1,1; 1,2; 1,3; 2,2; 3,1]

Turn the whole tile 90° clockwise. Every filled cell follows the same rotation; a mirror image is not equivalent.

The fast route

Track one distinctive corner through the turn.

## How we estimate

Upland Software does not publish a CCAT score, so the numbers on this page are our estimate. We start from Criteria's published job-family floors for the roles candidates report, then place them against Criteria's two norm groups, where the median raw score is 24. We adjust for how competitive the applicant pool is, and we use an employer's own published baseline whenever one exists.

Percentiles come from a normal model on Criteria's published median and standard deviations, shown as a range across both groups. See the [CCAT percentile chart](https://clevercatprep.com/ccat-percentiles) for the method and [what a good CCAT score is](https://clevercatprep.com/ccat-score) for the published job-family floors.

## Questions, answered

**Does Upland Software use the CCAT?**

Candidates report it. One Glassdoor community thread describes the CCAT as stage one of the software engineering process, before a Codility coding test.

**What comes after the Upland CCAT?**

In the reported process, a Codility coding test, then a technical interview, a business-unit round and an HR round.

**What CCAT score does Upland Software require?**

Upland does not publish one. Our estimate for software engineers is about 25 to 28 out of 50, from Criteria's suggested Software Development floor of 20 plus a typical tech-employer margin.

**Should I prepare for the CCAT or Codility first?**

The CCAT, because it comes first and decides whether you continue. A few focused days on timing usually matter more than extra coding practice at that point.

**Is the CCAT a coding test?**

No. It has no code at all: 50 math, verbal, logic and spatial questions in 15 minutes, without a calculator.

**How do I keep pace across 50 questions?**

The average is 18 seconds per question. Use the pacing check on this page to see whether your practice pace reaches the target, and skip anything you cannot place quickly.
