# The Crossover CCAT: the 35 baseline, the proctored retest and the prep rule

By [Avi Flombaum](https://avi.nyc) · Updated October 13, 2026

Crossover uses the CCAT as an early, mandatory gate for almost every role. Its own guide says a baseline of 35 out of 50 is most often the lowest passing score, set by the hiring manager and higher for senior roles. Before you prepare anywhere, read Crossover's guide: it says using most third-party CCAT materials counts as cheating and disqualifies your application.

## Crossover and the CCAT at a glance

Crossover's published baseline

35 /50

Crossover's CCAT guide says that most often a baseline score of 35 out of 50 is the lowest possible passing grade, set by the hiring manager and higher for senior roles.[1]

**Our estimated range**

35 to 45

**Our estimated target**

40

**Criteria floors for these roles**

19, 20, 21, 22

**Evidence it uses the CCAT**

Strong evidence

Crossover documents its CCAT process on its own site: a CCAT guide, a PCCAT (proctored) guide and a support FAQ. Candidates on Glassdoor also describe the CCAT link as mandatory to be considered.

This is the one employer that publishes a number: Crossover's guide calls 35 of 50 the usual lowest passing score and 43 or more excellent, so the range starts at 35. We put the target at 40 because hiring managers set the bar, senior roles sit higher, and the proctored retest has to land in the same range.

## Check your score against Crossover

The numbers below use our estimate for Crossover: a range of 35 to 45 out of 50 with a target of 40. Nothing is saved. If you ask Clever below, it sees your numbers.

Below the estimate

A 24 is about the 49th to 50th percentile of Criteria's published reference groups (our estimate). 16 more correct answers would reach our estimated target of 40.

## Roles at Crossover reported to include the CCAT

Criteria floors are from Criteria's sample score report. Our estimates are not published cutoffs.

| Role | Criteria job family and floor | Our estimate | Note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Software engineering | Software Development: 20 | 35 to 43 | Crossover's published baseline of 35 applies, far above Criteria's general floor for the family. Senior engineering roles are where Crossover says the bar rises. |
| Product and marketing | Marketing and Product: 21 | 35 to 43 | Same published baseline. Product manager roles are often senior, so plan for the upper half. |
| Sales | Sales / Account Executive: 19 | 35 to 40 | Crossover's baseline still applies even though Criteria's suggested floor for sales roles is the lowest of these. |
| Senior leadership (VP, director, general manager) | Senior and Executive Leadership: 22 | 40 to 46 | Crossover says the minimum is higher for senior roles and calls 43 or more excellent, so aim above the baseline. |

## Where the CCAT sits in Crossover's hiring process

1. ### Application and CCAT link

Soon after you apply, Crossover sends a CCAT link on ondemandassessment.com, Criteria's test platform. Candidates describe it as mandatory to stay in the process.
2. ### Unproctored CCAT

50 questions in 15 minutes, taken at home. Crossover does not disclose your score, and you get one attempt per email address every six months.
3. ### Skills tests

Candidates who clear the role's minimum move on to role-specific skills assessments, which vary by job.
4. ### Interviews (typical)

Interviews with the hiring team typically follow the skills stage. Crossover's guides do not spell out this step, so expect it to vary by role.
5. ### Proctored PCCAT

Finalists retake the test live with a proctor: ID check, webcam and a phone camera showing a side view. The score has to fall in the same range as your first attempt and above the role minimum.

Steps are as candidates describe them. Processes change by role and over time.

## Read Crossover's preparation rule before anything else

Crossover's CCAT guide says that engaging with most third-party CCAT preparation materials is treated as cheating and disqualifies an application. It names one exception, 12minprep.com. The same guide says plainly that you can prepare by familiarizing yourself with the types of questions on the test.

That rule covers practice sites, including this one. If you are applying to Crossover, read its guide first and follow it. Use what the guide permits, learn the question types described on this page, and treat any practice outside Crossover's exception as a risk to your application that you should check with Crossover before taking.

We say this up front because it matters more than any study tip. A strong score does not help if the application is disqualified for how you prepared.

## The proctored retest means your first score has to be yours

Crossover does not take the unproctored score on trust. Finalists sit the PCCAT, a live proctored version of the test, with an ID check, a webcam and a phone camera set up to show a side view of the desk. Crossover's PCCAT guide says the retest score has to fall in the same range as the first attempt and above the role's minimum.

Two things follow. A first score that was inflated by help will not survive the retest. And a first score you earned honestly but under good conditions needs to be repeatable under a proctor's eye, so practice the pace you can hold on an ordinary day, not your best run.

## One attempt every six months

Crossover's CCAT FAQ says you get one attempt per email address in a six month window, and that it does not share your score. If you fall short of a role's minimum, you will usually find out only by not moving forward.

Because the window is long and the feedback is thin, it is worth taking the first attempt only when you are ready: rested, in a quiet room, on a desktop or laptop, with nothing else open. Rushing a Monday morning attempt to look keen costs half a year.

## What 35 out of 50 means

Criteria reports a median of 24 out of 50 across its norm groups, and its sample score report suggests floors between 17 and 24 for most job families. Crossover's baseline of 35 is far above both. Crossover's own guide describes 35 as roughly its 85th percentile and 43 or more as excellent.

In practice, 35 means about 35 correct answers in 15 minutes, or roughly 18 seconds per question with very few misses. Most people do not finish all 50, so the realistic plan is to answer the fast questions quickly and accurately and let a few slow ones go.

- Crossover's published baseline: 35 of 50, set by the hiring manager.
- Higher for senior roles. Crossover calls 43 or more excellent.
- Criteria's median: 24 of 50. Criteria's suggested floors: 17 to 24 by job family.

## Question types to drill first

- [**Number series** Series questions are short to read and quick to solve once you spot the pattern, which is exactly the kind of point a 35-plus score depends on. Number series with worked examples](https://clevercatprep.com/ccat-number-series-questions)
- [**Syllogisms** Logic items reward a fixed method more than speed. Getting them right the first time protects the accuracy a high baseline needs. Syllogisms with worked examples](https://clevercatprep.com/ccat-syllogisms)
- [**Percentages** Short word problems with friendly numbers are common, and solving them mentally without a calculator saves the seconds you need elsewhere. Math questions with worked examples](https://clevercatprep.com/ccat-math-questions)

## Tips for the Crossover CCAT

- Read Crossover's CCAT guide and PCCAT guide before you practice anywhere, and follow its rule on third-party materials.
- Do not take the test until you are ready. You get one attempt per email every six months and no score back.
- Plan for about 18 seconds per question. At a 35 baseline you cannot afford long stalls on one hard item.
- Practice at the pace you can repeat under a proctor, because the PCCAT has to land in the same range as your first score.
- Set up for the PCCAT early: valid ID, a working webcam and a phone stand for the side view.

## How we estimate

Crossover publishes its own baseline, so the headline number above is theirs, with a citation. The role ranges are still our estimate. We start from Criteria's published job-family floors for the roles candidates report, then place them against Criteria's two norm groups, where the median raw score is 24. We adjust for how competitive the applicant pool is, and we use an employer's own published baseline whenever one exists.

Percentiles come from a normal model on Criteria's published median and standard deviations, shown as a range across both groups. See the [CCAT percentile chart](https://clevercatprep.com/ccat-percentiles) for the method and [what a good CCAT score is](https://clevercatprep.com/ccat-score) for the published job-family floors.
