# Proctored CCAT: what changes and how to prepare

By [Avi Flombaum](https://avi.nyc) · Updated October 14, 2026

A proctored CCAT is the Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test taken with supervision or monitoring. An employer or program may ask for it at the first sitting or as a retake to check an earlier unsupervised result. Your invitation defines the setup.

## A supervised sitting, sometimes called PCCAT

Employers can add proctoring to Criteria assessments. A supervised retake can help an organizer check that a candidate can repeat an unsupervised performance independently. A program using the term PCCAT may have its own process, so confirm the provider and instructions rather than assume every proctored test uses the same tools.

[Gauntlet AI applicants](https://clevercatprep.com/ccat/gauntlet-ai) report a proctored CCAT step. Crossover also describes supervised verification, but its preparation restrictions are separate. Read the [Crossover guide](https://clevercatprep.com/ccat/crossover) before choosing preparation material.

## What the proctor checks

[Criteria's proctoring documentation](https://criteria.helpdocs.io/article/cbcut6asft-proctoring) describes reference-photo checks, periodic webcam images and flags for a missing face, another person or a phone. Depending on the organizer's settings, monitoring may also include a second camera, audio clips when voices are detected and screen capture on a computer.

Identity, camera permissions, your environment and permitted materials can be checked before or during the sitting. Browser behavior, tab switches and focus loss may appear in provider session logs or employer instructions. Do not assume every setup has browser lockdown or that every focus change automatically fails a candidate. The organizer decides how to review the evidence.

## The format stays familiar; the setup may feel different

The standard CCAT has 50 questions in 15 minutes, no calculator and no penalty for wrong answers. Proctoring does not give you more time to solve a difficult question. Camera checks and uncertainty about the rules can add pressure, so settle equipment and materials before starting.

Practice on one screen with no phone or outside help. Confirm whether scratch paper, a second monitor or other equipment is permitted. Our timed simulator has no pause and no going back; that is our practice rule, not a universal statement about Criteria's navigation.

## Practice under the constraints you will use

- Take a full timed practice session independently in a quiet room.
- Use one screen, put your phone away and avoid switching tabs.
- Review pacing and recurring mistakes after the timer ends, not during it.
- Use only the materials permitted in your invitation.

[Practice pacing](https://clevercatprep.com/ccat-time-management) and [plan your remaining preparation days](https://clevercatprep.com/how-to-prepare-for-the-ccat). Familiarity can help you manage time; it does not guarantee a score.

## A short test-day checklist

- Read the invitation, equipment requirements and allowed-material rules.
- Check the supported browser, webcam, microphone and any screen-sharing permissions.
- Charge your computer and use a stable connection.
- Clear your desk, close unrelated apps and tell others not to interrupt.
- Keep your Event ID and the organizer's support details.
- Request accommodations or resolve unclear instructions before the timed sitting.

## Prepare for the format and follow the rules

Preparation means practicing original CCAT style questions and reviewing your own mistakes. Answer the assessment independently. Do not use an AI assistant, another person or unapproved materials during it. If your organizer restricts third-party preparation, follow that policy.

## Questions, answered

**Does proctoring change the questions or scoring?**

Proctoring is an assessment-monitoring option, not a separate published CCAT scoring scale. The standard CCAT is 50 questions in 15 minutes, scored by correct answers. A retake can draw different questions; confirm any employer-specific instructions.

**What if my connection drops?**

Keep your Event ID. Criteria's candidate FAQ says you can return to the assessment center and continue with it. For a proctored sitting, follow the recovery instructions and contact the assessment organizer if camera or screen monitoring cannot resume.

**Can I use a calculator or scratch paper?**

Criteria says no calculators. Its public candidate pages do not establish a universal scratch-paper rule. Follow your invitation and ask the organizer before starting if allowed materials are unclear.

**Does a proctoring flag mean I failed?**

Criteria reports Clear or Review. A Review result asks the employer to review the monitoring evidence; it is not an automatic assessment failure.
